Give & Receive Canvas #304
$45.00
This mixed media artwork in aqua, pearlescent white and deep blue tones with silver metallic dot work on a 3in x 3in mini canvas features the image of a reaching hand. Designed as a visual aid to prayer, this one-of-a-kind original art piece can be rotated on the included simple wooden easel to symbolize the prayers held in the heart on any given day, at any particular moment:
Hand down — I seek Divine presence, help, guidance, blessing, the outpouring of the Spirit.
Hand up — I give praise, worship, adoration to the Eternal. I commit myself to God’s will and work.
Hand to right side — I lay the needs of others before the Eternal One.
Hand to left side — I commit to helping, supporting and edifying others through the prompting of God’s Spirit.
A prayer guide card and care instructions are also included with the painting and easel. Signed and dated by the artist on back of canvas. The size of this art piece with display easel is approximately 5 1/2in x 3in x 3in. Arrives packaged in a decorative cellophane bag tied with raffia.

ARTIST STATEMENT
I have long said of myself that words are my second language. I continually seek ways to connect with the Divine through what is seen or can be visualized. As my own personal prayer life expands, I specifically explore ways of praying that do not involve words. My daily walk, for instance, is an opportunity to observe and join with nature in giving praise just by being present to the beauty around me. I’m not sure how the idea for creating this Give & Receive prayer aid originally came to me, but it gives us the opportunity to incorporate the sense of sight into prayer — something that wasn’t encouraged in my conservative Protestant upbringing.
A simple glance or a rotation of this mini painting thus can be a prayer. In that one still moment, the hand depicted on the canvas becomes a symbol for what lies on your heart.
This simple image of a hand is inspired by the beautiful hands found in Byzantine icon art. They are slender, intentional in gesture and seem to me as if they are caught in motion — like a stop action photo of the flowing hand movements of a dancer or a yoga master, or the saint raising hands in prayer.
The dot work is something you will find on nearly every piece I make. It is inspired by Celtic Christian illuminations of the Gospels. Illuminators often used red dots to outline words and letters to give the feel of the Word being alive. I use dots to represent an art piece's life-giving potential as the viewer connects to the Divine through the work.
