Observation in Darkness

Pause for just a moment and allow yourself to explore this photo. What do you notice? Does it evoke a feeling or emotion?
One of the best things about social media is having easy access to the creative work of others. There is no better place than Instagram. It is a land of infinite beauty and self-expression. Here you will find creatives of all kind regularity sharing what they do.
I’ve been following Omi Kim for some time and am drawn to his amazing night photography in the city of Osaka, Japan. His work evokes the sense mystery and often features rich color combinations.
This photo feels lonely… perhaps because of the rain. I can imagine the cool damp of this place and it evokes sadness also. The colorful neon reminds me of those moments when I am so down not even something I really enjoy sounds good or is able to lift my spirits. It is a feeling that has come over me so many times this year.
Look again at the image – there are two figures passing by and if you zoom in, they seem to be sharing a light moment. One man smiles. Now I get a sense of unity from this image — a sense of how strange it is right now to be experiencing pandemic along with every other person on the planet. We are not alone and it can be consoling to sit with the collective sense of fear, frustration, and loss.
Whatever challenges the week ahead holds for you, friends… may you know lightness… like the glow of neon in the night or a smile in the rain.
